Located in Alexandria, Virginia, just inside the D.C. beltway, the Alexandria Renew NMF is designed to help balance the 13 billion gallons of flow the facility treats each year, a critical aspect to reducing nutrient inflow to the Chesapeake Bay. The centerpiece of the system is an 18-million-gallon concrete tank which extends 30 feet underground and is topped with a synthetic athletic field for public use. Ulliman Schutte's team also installed a state-of-the-art Anammox system, one of the first of its kind in the United States.
This $154-million project utilized the CMAR delivery method to provide Alexandria Renew with cost and schedule certainty. Alexandria Renew realized substantial benefits almost immediately, as our CMAR team was able to deliver approximately $11 million in incorporated savings through Value Engineering. Additional benefit was realized through Ulliman Schutte’s value-added services; as design progressed, our engineers developed BIM-driven 3D models to virtually construct the piping systems within the NMF gallery, providing material coordination and sequencing visualization as well as operability and access analyses.
